Friend
An original poem by C. N. Mileham.
I had a rooster once
He perched on a metal railing
on our front porch.
He woke the neighborhood
with his warning call that
dawn was upon us.
He would run to me
when I got off the bus
In the late afternoon.
I would greet him,
Pick him up and with both hands
fling him into the sky
At the apogee he would
open his wings
And glide back to earth
I loved the power of partnership
And I guess that he
Loved to fly.
One day he landed poorly
and broke one of his legs
It never healed correctly, withered.
I had a one legged rooster once.
