The Story Behind the Song

Decades ago, a dear friend entrusted me with a terrible secret.

I promised never to reveal it.

For years, I honored that promise, carrying the burden in silence. But some horrors refuse to remain buried.

His toes.

Those monstrous, prehensile appendages have haunted my dreams for decades. Even the beautiful white sands of the Bahamas offer no refuge from the memory.

And yet, there is hope.

His wife, a woman of extraordinary courage and apparently limitless love, has accepted him exactly as he is. To witness such devotion is to glimpse the very best of humanity.

I have finally broken my promise by speaking publicly of his shame.

I can only hope that confession brings relief from my nightmares—and perhaps, at long last, a peaceful night's sleep.

My friend shall remain unnamed.

Some secrets, after all, deserve at least a little protection.

Lyrics — Dedos del Pie

Decades back, a friend of mine
Told me a secret, drew the line
Said keep it locked, said keep it low
Now it’s a ghost I can’t let go

He trusted me with the darkest thing
A confession no bell could un-ring
If I could rewind, turn back the day
I’d spurn that trust, look away

’Cause it wakes me up, it rips me raw
That ancient terror in my jaw
White Bahamas sand, I run, I flee
From something coming after me

Dedos del Pie — monstruosos!
Alien claws in the undertow
Prehensile lemur, writhing low
Toe terrors chasing where I go
Dedos del Pie — I can’t unsee
Those monsters coming after me

Fevered nightmares, tentacles crawl
Digits writhing down the hall
I close my eyes and there they are
Ten little horrors, near and far

’Cause it wakes me up, it rips me raw
That ancient terror in my jaw
White Bahamas sand, I run, I flee
From something coming after me

Dedos del Pie — monstruosos!
Alien claws in the undertow
Prehensile lemur, writhing low
Toe terrors chasing where I go
Dedos del Pie — I can’t unsee
Those monsters coming after me

But one look down and now you know
The depth and breadth of love below
His wife’s a hero, brave and true
She sees those toes and loves him too

Dedos del Pie… monstruosos
Some love runs deeper than we know
She stayed, she stayed, through all the woe
Dedos del Pie… let it go
